After launching on Base in March 2025, prediction-markets platform Trueo has announced plans to move its protocol to the Ethereum mainnet. The team said Ethereum now offers broader integration opportunities, stronger network effects and closer alignment with its long-term goal of building a widely used, fully open and largely immutable platform.

Trueo launched on the Layer 2 network when Ethereum mainnet fees were still relatively high and some of its features remained experimental. Following the migration, the developers plan to focus on bringing liquidity to key markets and introducing the next generation of the project’s oracle, which determines event outcomes and settles contracts.

The team said it is working to create a more neutral and reliable mechanism for resolving disputed outcomes. In its view, existing prediction markets lack a transparent process for settling disagreements.

Trueo’s Base version will continue to operate during the migration. The team advised users not to create new markets on Base with an end date after Jan. 31, 2027. The TRUE token will also migrate to Ethereum, and the migration window will remain open indefinitely.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin supported the decision. He said he was glad to see another strong participant come to Ethereum’s Layer 1 with a focus on decentralization, ethical principles and “interesting and meaningful” applications of prediction markets.

Prediction-markets activity expands

Interest in prediction markets has increased sharply over the past two years. According to KPMG data, combined trading volume on Kalshi and Polymarket exceeded $40 billion in 2025, more than four times the roughly $9 billion recorded a year earlier.

Growth continued in 2026. A Pew Research Center analysis based on data from The Block showed that combined monthly trading volume on Kalshi and Polymarket rose from less than $5 billion in September 2025 to about $24 billion in April 2026. Sports, politics and cryptocurrencies accounted for around 90% of activity on both platforms.

In June, Kalshi, Polymarket and Polymarket’s U.S. version recorded combined volume of $44.8 billion, up 75% from May. The FIFA World Cup was the main driver. Kalshi accounted for $31.5 billion, an increase of 87.4% from the previous month.

The sector has also attracted traditional financial companies. In 2025, New York Stock Exchange owner Intercontinental Exchange announced an investment of up to $2 billion in Polymarket. ICE invested an additional $600 million in the platform in March 2026.

Robinhood reported in July that event contracts generated $156 million in second-quarter revenue, exceeding its revenue of $129 million from stock trading and $100 million from cryptocurrencies.

Buterin’s view of prediction markets

Buterin’s support for Trueo is consistent with his previously stated views on the sector. In February 2026, he criticized prediction markets in their current form for leaning too heavily toward gambling and short-term wagers.

Buterin has identified risk hedging as one of the most promising uses for such platforms. In his view, hedging could reduce the “casino factor” and give prediction markets practical, long-term value.

He said users could insure themselves against rising future expenses through bundles of contracts tied to food, housing and other price indicators. Buterin suggested using artificial intelligence to build personalized baskets of those contracts.

Buterin has also focused on the role of oracles, previously describing them as one of the weak points of prediction markets dealing with real-world events.
