Ethereum Foundation Launches Updated Grant Program

The Ethereum Foundation (EF) has announced a significant shift in its Ecosystem Support Program (ESP) grant system. This updated approach is designed to enhance the strategic allocation of resources within the Ethereum ecosystem. With new initiatives like Wishlist and Requests for Proposals (RFPs), EF aims to align its funding more closely with network priorities, thereby fostering innovation and promoting public goods.

Strategic Funding Directions: Wishlist and RFPs

Wishlist covers broad themes where EF sees potential for growth. It outlines strategic directions and high-level goals while encouraging developers to propose ideas that align with specific priorities. On the other hand, RFPs focus on precise tasks or challenges, inviting participants to propose targeted solutions with measurable outcomes. These applications include defined scopes of work, deadlines, and performance metrics.
By implementing these two new directions—Wishlist and RFPs—EF intends to identify pressing ecosystem needs based on feedback from organizational teams. This strategic approach not only aims at improving efficiency but also at ensuring alignment with Ethereum’s evolving landscape.

A Shift from Reactive to Proactive Support

Previously, EF’s open grant program laid the foundational blocks for numerous projects within the Ethereum ecosystem. However, as application volumes increased alongside resource limitations due to a small team size, it became critical for EF to transition towards a more proactive model centered around strategic influence.
Initial Wishlist items and RFP requests have already been published on the program’s website. They span crucial areas such as cryptography, privacy, security, community development, and application layers.
Moreover, regular consultation sessions remain available for participants seeking guidance on aligning their ideas with current priorities. EF emphasizes that this update extends beyond grants; it includes building a “system of long-term support,” encompassing mentorship, networking among participants, and analysis of results for future initiative refinement.

Navigating Organizational Changes Amid Criticism

This launch comes amid active internal changes within EF. In October 2025, they introduced a Privacy Cluster division aimed at advancing digital privacy efforts. Additionally, developers recently activated the Fusaka test hard fork—a move preparing the network for another major update scheduled for December 2025.
However, it is important to note that not all developments have been smooth sailing within EF’s structure lately. The organization faced criticism from one of Ethereum’s lead developers Peter Szilagyi regarding centralized influence in governance structures—an aspect detailed further elsewhere.
Through these renewed efforts under ESP’s updated program framework alongside navigating internal transformations amidst external scrutiny—the Ethereum Foundation continues striving toward sustainable progress across multiple fronts contributing positively toward broader cryptocurrency market dynamics today!
