Exposing a Major Crypto Scam

In an alarming revelation, a New York resident conducted a significant social engineering scheme that defrauded Coinbase users of over $4 million. The scam, orchestrated by Christian Nieves, known online as Daytwo or PawsOnHips, involved impersonating Coinbase support to extract sensitive information from victims. This fraudulent activity was unveiled in an in-depth investigation by crypto analyst ZachXBT.

The Modus Operandi

The operation employed a fake call center to deceive users into creating wallets on phishing websites with pre-compromised seed phrases. According to ZachXBT, Nieves led a small group of scammers, personally reaching out to victims and coercing them into setting up compromised Coinbase wallets. One notable incident occurred in November 2024 when an elderly user lost $240,000.

Funds Misused for Gambling and Luxury Goods

The stolen funds were divided into three parts: deposits at Roobet casino, conversion into the anonymous cryptocurrency Monero (XMR), and luxury purchases including a Corvette adorned with Nieves’s Instagram handle. ZachXBT provided audio-visual evidence linking the Roobet deposit address used by ‘pawsonhips’ to at least 30 theft incidents.

Public Taunts and Lack of Discretion

Despite his criminal activities, Nieves openly flaunted his illicit gains in Discord chats and mocked crypto analysts like ZachXBT. He even showcased his extravagant lifestyle through social media posts that connected his real identity to his online pseudonyms.

Implications for the Crypto Community

This case highlights the vulnerabilities within cryptocurrency exchanges like Coinbase when targeted by sophisticated social engineering scams. While recovery of lost funds remains unlikely due to gambling losses, this incident underscores the need for enhanced security measures and awareness among crypto users.
Nieves’s blatant disregard for anonymity is rare among scammers; however, it may facilitate legal proceedings given he is not a minor. This serves as a stark reminder for cryptocurrency users to remain vigilant against similar fraudulent schemes.
As we reflect on these events, it’s crucial for both individuals and institutions in the crypto space to prioritize security protocols to safeguard digital assets effectively against emerging threats like these high-profile scams.
