- Aptos Labs has introduced MonoMove, a proposed upgrade to the Aptos blockchain execution engine that is expected to reach functional readiness by the end of 2026 and be deployed on mainnet in 2027.
- The company says MonoMove executed certain smart contracts up to 55 times faster than the current engine in internal tests, while adding redundant security checks intended to protect digital assets.
- Aptos Labs plans further testing, fuzzing and formal verification before the upgrade faces a community governance vote.
Aptos Labs has announced MonoMove, a proposed upgrade intended to increase smart contract processing speed and strengthen network security for institutional use.
According to the company, MonoMove executed certain smart contracts up to 55 times faster than the current Aptos engine during internal testing. Aptos Labs said the new system is already among the fastest execution engines used in production blockchains.
Internal benchmarks
Aptos Labs tested MonoMove using transactions replayed from the Aptos mainnet and compared the results with those of the current engine. On the onchain exchange Decibel, collateral withdrawals were up to 55 times faster with MonoMove, while order placement was up to 22 times faster.
Based on the company’s internal benchmarks, the engine’s end-to-end sequential throughput increased by up to 11 times. The tests covered order books, liquidity pools, lending markets, oracle updates and payment flows.
Aptos Labs said that after optimizing the engine, most remaining bottlenecks involve interactions between the execution and storage layers.
Security safeguards
MonoMove preserves the safety rules of Move, the programming language used in the Aptos ecosystem. Those rules govern the creation, copying and transfer of digital assets.
The engine also uses redundant checks designed to protect assets if an error occurs in the verifier or virtual machine. According to the developers, this approach should eliminate certain classes of failures at the engine level rather than relying solely on safeguards in individual products and applications.
“Institutions won’t build markets on infrastructure that can’t keep up with their needs, and they won’t entrust client assets to infrastructure they can’t trust,” Aptos Labs co-founder and CEO Avery Ching said.
Ching said MonoMove is intended to address both the performance and security requirements of institutional finance.
Deployment planned for 2027
Aptos Labs expects MonoMove to reach functional readiness by the end of 2026. Mainnet deployment is scheduled for 2027, following a community governance vote.
Until then, the company plans extended testing and engine fuzzing. It also intends to validate critical components through formal verification, a mathematical method for proving software correctness.
Ching said MonoMove should deliver the fastest smart contract execution the company has measured while strengthening the blockchain’s security model.
In May 2026, Aptos said it would allocate $50 million to the development of artificial intelligence projects and the blockchain ecosystem.
