NYSE Tested Avalanche for a Year as Stock Market Moves Onchain

  • NYSE has tested Avalanche technology for the past year, according to Ava Labs President Charlie Cooper.
  • The exchange has not announced a final blockchain choice for its planned tokenized-securities platform.
  • ICE executive Michael Blaugrund said Avalanche meets many of the requirements being considered.

Ava Labs President Charlie Cooper said the New York Stock Exchange has spent the past year testing Avalanche and working with Ava Labs to integrate the technology into its infrastructure. The work could support NYSE’s planned tokenized-securities platform, although the exchange has not announced a final blockchain choice.

Cooper made the remarks at the Avalanche Summit in New York, according to The Block. He said the parties also evaluated the solution’s economic model.

NYSE evaluates Avalanche

Cooper said NYSE assessed Avalanche’s technical capabilities and sought to determine how well Ava Labs understood the exchange’s broader business needs.

“We’ve remained in a close working relationship. I leave it to the NYSE guys to talk publicly about where they are in the whole process,” Cooper said.

Michael Blaugrund, head of strategic initiatives at NYSE parent Intercontinental Exchange, also addressed the evaluation at the event. He said ICE had been actively engaging with the Avalanche team while considering blockchain platforms.

“As we’ve evaluated different platforms, Avalanche checks a lot of those boxes for us, so we’re very engaged with the team,” Blaugrund said.

In a Sept. 17, 2026, post, Avalanche said NYSE planned to bring round-the-clock trading onchain through an alternative trading system under development.

Tokenized-securities platform awaits approval

NYSE announced in January that it was developing a platform for trading and onchain settlement of tokenized shares in U.S. companies and exchange-traded funds. The project requires regulatory approval and would combine NYSE’s Pillar order-matching mechanism with blockchain infrastructure.

The planned system is also expected to support multiple blockchains for settlement and asset custody. NYSE has not identified the specific blockchain it will use.

In August, ICE reached an agreement to use tZERO’s infrastructure for the tokenized-securities market and named the company as a development partner.

Cooper said he expected some trading venues to move to 24-hour trading five days a week within a year, but he declined to predict whether the model would extend to the largest exchanges.

“Will that be the mainstream exchanges? The largest in the world? The LSEs, the NYSEs, the CMEs? I don’t know about that,” Cooper said.

He said smaller venues were already seeking to attract liquidity. “There are a lot of smaller venues that are making a very compelling case to the world to put liquidity on them.”

Avalanche expands tokenization projects

Avalanche has expanded its involvement in projects involving real-world asset tokenization and the movement of traditional financial services onchain. The blockchain was used in FIFA’s ticketing system for the 2026 World Cup, while Ethena launched a neobank on Avalanche that supports stablecoin payments.

South Korea also plans to move part of its capital markets onchain. India’s Arya.ag is preparing its own layer-1 network on Avalanche to tokenize $2 billion in agricultural assets.
