  • In response to these claims, Polymarket has promised an internal audit of their promotional materials to ensure transparency and fairness.

Polymarket Accused by WSJ of Using Paid Videos with Fake Winning Bets

The Wall Street Journal has released an investigative report accusing Polymarket of running a deceptive promotional campaign. According to the report, influencers were paid to create videos showcasing supposedly successful bets placed on the platform, which turned out to be fabricated. These video clips were shot on fake sites designed to mimic the appearance of the actual Polymarket interface.

The Investigation Findings

WSJ’s thorough analysis covered 1,105 videos from ten content creators posted between December 2025 and mid-May 2026. Approximately 70% of these videos featured various event wagers amounting to nearly $1.9 million in total. However, none of these bets were genuine. Even step-by-step processes shown in some clips for purchasing contracts were staged.
Furthermore, WSJ identified 118 videos featuring creators reacting enthusiastically to supposed wins totaling about $900,000. These used outdated footage or misleading titles to fabricate evidence of victories.

A Case Study: Influencer George Makihara

One example highlighted is student influencer George Makihara. In January 2026, he posted a video claiming victory on a bet regarding U.S. President Donald Trump mentioning “McDonald’s” in a public address that month. The purported winnings amounted to $100,000 from a series of bogus wagers totaling $410,000 he allegedly placed between January and May 2026.
Although there was such a market on Polymarket at that time, Makihara relied on outdated footage while around fifty other users lost their stakes on McDonald’s-related bets.

Response and Market Impact

Upon discovering these allegations, some influencers removed their promotional content following WSJ’s approach while associated mock sites were shut down. Despite this controversy surrounding its viral campaign targeting primarily Americans—which gained over 140 million views—Polymarket committed itself towards conducting an internal audit aimed at ensuring transparency within its promotions moving forward.
