WazirX to Cancel All Operations After July 18 Hack
The cryptocurrency exchange WazirX has announced its decision to cancel all transactions conducted on the platform from July 18 to July 21, 2024. This measure aims to ensure equal conditions for all users following a significant security breach.
Restoration of User Balances
According to the company, user balances will be restored to their status as of July 18, 2024, at 1:00 PM IST (10:30 AM Kyiv time) over the next few days. Affected users will receive an email notification regarding the changes.
Challenges and Decisions
WazirX acknowledged that the decision was difficult but necessary to maintain fairness across the platform. The cancellation will include not just transactions but also associated commission and referral payments. However, deposits are not included in this measure and will be reviewed separately.
Details of the Cyber Attack
The hack, which targeted WazirX’s multi-signature wallet on the Ethereum network, resulted in a loss of $235 million—accounting for 45% of the exchange’s reserves. Trading and withdrawal services were promptly halted following the breach.
Socialized Losses Strategy and Community Response
In late July, WazirX introduced a “socialized losses” strategy, designed to distribute the losses evenly among users. This decision has sparked criticism within the crypto community, with some, including CoinDCX co-founder Sumit Gupta, arguing that the strategy prioritizes business interests over those of the clients.
The steps taken by WazirX in the aftermath of the hack are critical in safeguarding user interests and maintaining trust within the crypto market. While the approach has faced scrutiny, the broader impact on the cryptocurrency landscape remains to be seen.
