Vitalik Buterin Critiques Layer 2 Solutions as Redundant

In a recent appearance at the Hong Kong Web3 Festival, Vitalik Buterin, a prominent figure in the cryptocurrency world and co-founder of Ethereum, expressed his views on the future direction of blockchain technology. His speech emphasized how Ethereum has evolved considerably over time with significant changes not only within the blockchain ecosystem but also in sectors like artificial intelligence and quantum technologies.
Buterin highlighted two core functions of Ethereum: serving as a public “bulletin board” for message transmission, and providing infrastructure for digital asset exchanges. These assets include ERC20 tokens, NFTs, among others. Furthermore, he identified promising use cases that integrate both on-chain and off-chain features. Examples include the Ethereum Name Service (ENS), prediction markets, and privacy-centric projects.

The Futility of Certain Layer 2 Networks

Buterin critiqued some Layer 2 solutions that mimic Ethereum’s base layer without offering unique utilities. According to him, these networks are unnecessary because they replicate existing functionalities while being more centralized and rapidly expanding.
He urged developers to focus on creating innovative solutions that address gaps in the first layer rather than merely cloning it. This perspective aligns with previous statements by both Buterin and the Ethereum Foundation regarding second-layer solutions’ roles within the ecosystem.

Ethereum’s Scalability Roadmap

Looking ahead, Buterin outlined two primary goals for scaling Ethereum’s first layer: data processing enhancements and computational efficiency. In the short term, this involves increasing gas limits, advancing ZK-EVM rollups, preparing for post-quantum cryptography challenges, accelerating block production times, and implementing privacy measures.
Medium-term objectives focus on optimizing network state management by reducing data storage requirements across all network states. Long-term aspirations aim at complete protection against quantum threats along with formal verification processes to ensure simplicity and autonomy—enabling what he called a “walk away” test for network resilience.
In summary: Vitalik Buterin envisions an ambitious path towards transforming Ethereum into a global computer—a simple yet robust foundational layer supporting new innovations while facilitating seamless transactions across diverse applications within its ecosystem.
