Unraveling the THORChain Exploit: A Blow Exceeding $10 Million

In an unsettling development within the cryptocurrency realm, THORChain encountered a sizable exploit amounting to over $10 million. This news was brought to light by on-chain investigator ZachXBT, who highlighted connections with specific addresses tied to the incident. The breach impacted multiple networks, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, BNB Chain, and Base.
Initially assessed at around $7.4 million in damages, the figure was later revised upwards past $10.7 million. In reaction to this breach, THORChain’s team promptly halted trading activities within their protocol.
ZachXBT also shared a list of addresses implicated in the heist. PeckShield, an analytical firm specializing in blockchain security, corroborated these findings. According to their estimates, cybercriminals siphoned off approximately $10 million worth of crypto assets. This includes 36.75 BTC valued at roughly $3 million and about $7 million from BNB Chain, Ethereum, and Base networks.

The Aftermath: Market Reactions and Impact on RUNE Token

Amidst reports of the exploit, THORChain’s native token RUNE saw its price plummet by approximately 10%. At the time of writing, RUNE is trading near the level of $0.53.
