Tether Halts Bitcoin Mining Operations in Uruguay

Tether, the issuer of the USDT stablecoin, has announced the cessation of its Bitcoin mining operations in Uruguay. This decision was primarily driven by uncompetitive electricity rates that rendered the business unsustainable. The company notified Uruguay’s Ministry of Labor about this development while laying off most of its local workforce.

Background and Initial Investment Plans

In May 2023, Tether made headlines by announcing a substantial investment in Bitcoin mining within Uruguay. The choice of this jurisdiction was attributed to its potential in renewable energy sources. A local company, reportedly Microfin, was engaged as an operator for two cryptocurrency mining facilities.

Financial Challenges and Operational Hurdles

By September 2025, reports surfaced indicating that Tether and its partner owed nearly $5 million to local authorities. As a consequence, electricity supply to their facilities ceased at the end of July. Although Tether acknowledged this debt, it denied any immediate plans to exit Uruguay.
Despite efforts to negotiate favorable terms with local authorities, high electricity costs proved insurmountable. Consequently, Tether decided to scale down operations significantly and dismissed 30 out of 38 employees.

Ambitious Renewable Energy Projects

Tether’s project involved an investment plan up to $500 million for constructing three crypto-mining sites with a combined capacity of 165 MW. In addition, they aimed to develop wind turbines and solar panels generating up to 300 MW.
According to El Observador, at least $150 million was allocated towards infrastructure development managed by the National Administration of Power Plants and Electrical Transmissions (UTE) and the National Integrated Energy System.

The Broader Implications on Tether’s Strategy

While exiting Uruguay represents a setback for Tether’s immediate operational goals in South America, it underscores their commitment towards long-term projects across Latin America. The company maintains its vision despite this temporary hiccup.
CEO Paolo Ardoino previously stated that Tether aims to become the world’s largest Bitcoin miner by late 2025—a goal still within reach if challenges like those faced in Uruguay can be navigated successfully.
Ultimately though halting operations is disappointing news today; lessons learned here will likely shape future endeavors positively across other regions where sustainable energy solutions align better economically with corporate objectives—promising indeed!
