Tether Freezes $344 Million in USDT: A Collaborative Effort with U.S. Authorities

In a significant move within the cryptocurrency space, Tether announced the freezing of more than $344 million in its stablecoin, USDT. This decision was made in coordination with U.S. government authorities and law enforcement agencies, following information that linked these funds to potential illegal activities.
Proactive Measures Against Illegal Activities
The swift blocking of the wallets containing the funds underscores Tether’s commitment to preventing the further movement of illicit money. The company’s proactive approach ensures that they respond during active investigations rather than after crimes have occurred.

Collaboration with Law Enforcement: A Global Perspective

Tether emphasizes its systemic cooperation with regulators and law enforcement across the globe. Currently, they collaborate with over 340 law enforcement agencies spanning 65 countries and have been involved in more than 2,300 investigations.
This collaboration has led to freezing over $4.4 billion worth of assets worldwide, including more than $2.1 billion related to U.S.-based cases alone. Over 1,200 instances involve American law enforcement agencies.

A Statement from Tether’s CEO

Paolo Ardoino, CEO of Tether, stated emphatically that “USDT is not a safe haven for illegal activity.” He highlighted that when platforms fail to react swiftly enough, oversight weakens, users are exposed to risks, and trust deteriorates.
Tether also points out the advantages public blockchains offer over traditional financial systems. These include:
– Tracking transactions effectively
– Identifying suspicious wallets
– Blocking assets before their further transfer

Continued Commitment to Financial Integrity

Tether’s involvement extends beyond this recent freeze; it has previously assisted in cases resulting in asset confiscations amounting to approximately $61 million and about $225 million related to fraud schemes like pig butchering.
Additionally, earlier actions this year included freezing $182 million USDT on five addresses on the TRON network and aiding Turkish authorities in blocking over $500 million linked to illegal betting and money laundering.
These consistent efforts underscore Tether’s dedication towards maintaining integrity within the cryptocurrency market while supporting international regulatory frameworks aimed at curbing unlawful financial practices.
