Sweden Considers Creating a National Bitcoin Reserve

In an intriguing development for the cryptocurrency community, members of the Swedish Parliament have put forth a proposal to explore the creation of a national Bitcoin reserve. Submitted by Dennis Diukarev and David Perez from the “Sweden Democrats” party, this initiative suggests that Riksbank could manage the proposed reserve. The initiative reflects growing global interest in incorporating digital currencies into national financial strategies.

The Proposal: Key Aspects and Reasons

On October 1, 2025, Swedish MPs submitted their proposal to Riksdag, urging the government to investigate how a state Bitcoin reserve could be structured and managed. The document emphasizes Bitcoin’s potential as a complement to traditional gold reserves, citing its digital nature and capacity for economic diversification.
Notably, earlier this year, MP Rickard Nordin queried Finance Minister Elisabeth Svantesson about leveraging Bitcoin for crypto reserves. Furthermore, Diukarev and Perez advocate for no changes in legal tender definitions or central bank digital currency (CBDC) implementations by the government.

Why Bitcoin?

The proposal underscores several compelling reasons for adopting Bitcoin:
Diversification: Unlike traditional currencies and gold vulnerable to geopolitical risks, Bitcoin operates independently of any single country’s monetary policies.
Inflation Protection: With its supply capped at 21 million coins, Bitcoin offers an inherent shield against inflation compared to infinitely printable fiat currencies.
Liquidity: Operating round-the-clock with nearly instant transactions makes Bitcoin significantly cheaper than international money transfers.
Innovation: As one of the world’s largest assets alongside silver and major corporations, embracing Bitcoin aligns with innovation-driven growth strategies.

A Global Trend

This initiative mirrors a rising global trend towards forming state-backed cryptocurrency reserves. In March, former U.S. President Donald Trump signed an order establishing a national Bitcoin reserve funded by confiscated assets. Bhutan, El Salvador, and the UAE have launched similar initiatives while countries like Poland and Czechia are contemplating similar moves.
The Swedish proposal suggests utilizing confiscated Bitcoins under Riksbank or another responsible institution’s supervision for budget-neutral implementation—an approach aligning with existing practices in nations like the UK and China regarding seized digital assets.
Sweden stands on the brink of joining this digital race among nations recognizing Bitcoin’s potential. Advocates underscore that creating such strategic reserves prepares nations for potentially disruptive changes in global financial infrastructures—a sentiment echoed by notable figures like BlackRock’s Robert Mitchneck and U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell who have previously likened Bitcoin to digital gold.
In conclusion, Sweden’s parliamentary proposal marks another significant step towards cryptocurrency adoption at state levels worldwide. It highlights growing recognition of cryptocurrencies’ strategic value amid evolving global financial dynamics—a development worth watching closely as it unfolds across international borders.
