Survey Insights: Limited Bitcoin Adoption in El Salvador

El Salvador’s ambitious move to legalize Bitcoin in September 2021 has been a topic of global interest. However, a recent survey by Francisco Gavidia University revealed that only 7.5% of Salvadorans actively use Bitcoin for transactions. The survey, conducted with 1,224 participants aged 18 and over between September 25 and September 30, 2024, highlighted various economic, social, and political perspectives within the country.

High Approval Ratings for President Bukele

Despite the limited adoption of Bitcoin, President Nayib Bukele enjoys a strong approval rating, scoring an impressive average of 8.43 out of 10. While this represents a slight decrease from June 2023, it remains higher than the ratings from May 2022. The survey suggests that Salvadorans largely support Bukele’s leadership, although there are mixed feelings about the country’s economic situation.

Economic Sentiment and Future Priorities

When asked about the current economic situation, 52.5% of respondents rated it as “average,” while 17% described it as “poor,” and 3.4% as “very poor.” Meanwhile, 27% expressed overall satisfaction with the economic climate. Looking to the future, 52.4% of participants believe the government should prioritize education, followed by 26.5% advocating for a focus on industry. Only 1.3% think more attention should be given to Bitcoin-related initiatives.

Bitcoin’s Role in El Salvador

El Salvador’s decision to legalize Bitcoin has been met with both enthusiasm and criticism. Beyond launching Bitcoin-related projects, the government has invested heavily in the cryptocurrency, controlling 6,127 BTC as of mid-October 2024. However, the International Monetary Fund has repeatedly urged El Salvador to reevaluate its Bitcoin policy, most recently in early October 2024.
President Bukele himself has acknowledged that the Bitcoin initiative has not fully met expectations. Nonetheless, he remains steadfast in offering Bitcoin as an alternative rather than a mandatory currency, emphasizing the government’s non-coercive approach.

Broader Implications for the Crypto Market

The mixed reception of Bitcoin in El Salvador offers valuable insights into the complexities of cryptocurrency adoption on a national scale. While the government’s commitment to Bitcoin demonstrates a significant shift towards digital currencies, public opinion suggests a preference for focusing on traditional economic sectors like education and industry. This dynamic illustrates the challenges of integrating cryptocurrencies into established financial systems and highlights the need for balanced policies that consider both innovation and public sentiment.
In conclusion, El Salvador’s Bitcoin journey continues to unfold, providing important lessons for other countries considering similar paths. As the global crypto market evolves, the experiences of early adopters like El Salvador will be crucial in shaping future digital currency policies worldwide.
