South Korea Uncovers Over 6 Million Violations by Bithumb and Fines Exchange $24 Million

In a significant development within the cryptocurrency industry, South Korean authorities have imposed a hefty fine of 36.8 billion won (approximately $24.5 million) on the crypto exchange, Bithumb. This decision follows the discovery of extensive violations of anti-money laundering (AML) regulations.
According to the report from Yonhap, financial regulators identified a staggering 6.65 million AML breaches during their inspection of Bithumb’s systems. These violations pertained to client identity verification processes, transaction restrictions, and record-keeping requirements.

Extensive Violations Uncovered

The investigation revealed that Bithumb facilitated 45,772 cryptocurrency transactions associated with 18 unregistered overseas virtual asset service providers (VASPs). Authorities noted their repeated requests for Bithumb to cease trading with these undeclared VASPs went unheeded. The company’s failure to comply demonstrated a lack of readiness to adhere to legal mandates.

Partial Ban for New Clients

The Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), part of South Korea’s Financial Services Commission, spearheaded the sanctions against Bithumb after evaluating its compliance with the “Act on Reporting and Using Specific Financial Transaction Information.” As part of these measures, the exchange is prohibited from processing external cryptocurrency transfers for new clients between March 27 and September 26, 2026. However, existing customers are unaffected by these restrictions.
New users can still buy and sell digital assets and deposit or withdraw Korean won but cannot conduct external crypto transfers.

Significant Implications for Crypto Regulation

This penalty marks the largest financial punishment ever levied against a cryptocurrency exchange in South Korea, highlighting intensified regulatory scrutiny over AML compliance within the sector. Experts suggest this move underscores heightened governmental oversight aimed at curbing money laundering activities linked to digital currencies.
The regulatory action followed an earlier probe into Bithumb after a transfer incident involving 620,000 BTC was noted by authorities—a clear indication of escalating vigilance over crypto exchanges in maintaining stringent operational standards.
Ultimately, this case serves as a critical reminder for other exchanges operating within jurisdictional purviews that robust compliance frameworks are not merely optional but essential in navigating today’s complex regulatory landscape—a vital step towards fostering trust and transparency in the evolving world of digital finance.
