  • Centralized exchanges BingX and Indodax were major targets.
  • Decentralized protocol Penpie also suffered significant losses.
  • Phishing attacks resulted in additional losses totaling $32.4 million.

September Losses from Hacker Attacks Surpass $120 Million

The latest report from PeckShield highlights a concerning trend in the cryptocurrency industry: a significant rise in losses due to hacker attacks. According to the report, the crypto sector lost over $120 million in September 2024 alone, with centralized exchanges (CEX) BingX and Indodax being the primary targets.

Major Incidents in September

In their detailed analysis, PeckShield’s experts revealed that more than half of the stolen funds originated from two major incidents. The first involved the centralized exchange BingX, which was breached on September 20, resulting in a staggering $44 million loss. The second significant attack targeted the Indonesian exchange Indodax on September 11, where hackers made off with $21 million in assets.

Impact on Decentralized Protocols

The decentralized protocol Penpie also faced substantial losses. During the attack, the project lost cryptocurrency assets worth $27.3 million. The stolen funds were later converted into 11,109 ETH, with part of the assets being funneled through the crypto mixer Tornado Cash, complicating recovery efforts.

Phishing Attacks Add to the Woes

In addition to direct hacks, phishing attacks have been another significant source of losses. In September, phishing scams alone accounted for $32.4 million in stolen funds. One notable incident involved a major crypto investor losing 12,083 spWETH after signing a phishing transaction.

Impact on the Crypto Industry

The burgeoning losses underscore the vulnerabilities within the cryptocurrency ecosystem, particularly as it relates to centralized exchanges and the security of decentralized protocols. These incidents not only result in financial losses but also erode investor confidence in digital assets.

Key Takeaways

The report by PeckShield serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing security challenges within the crypto industry. With over $120 million lost in a single month, the need for robust security measures and vigilance against phishing attacks has never been more critical. As the industry continues to evolve, stakeholders must prioritize security to safeguard assets and maintain trust in the digital financial system.
