Polkoda at a Hook: ‘Crypto Experts’ Scammed a Retiree Thrice for $840,000

The world of cryptocurrency is fraught with both opportunity and risk. A recent incident in Hong Kong highlights the darker side of digital currencies. Over six months, a 66-year-old resident fell victim to a series of connected crypto scams, ultimately losing around $840,000. This compelling story illustrates how easily individuals can be deceived by promises of guaranteed profits and expert advice.

Details of the Scam

In what appeared to be a meticulously planned operation, scammers targeted their victim through WhatsApp. They posed as seasoned investment gurus in virtual currencies. The first scam started in September 2025 when one fraudster convinced the retiree to transfer around $180,000 into a controlled wallet before cutting off communication entirely.
Undeterred by his losses, the victim sought another “specialist” online who claimed they could help recover the stolen funds for a fee. This supposed savior demanded a security deposit of $75,000 but vanished once paid.
The final act occurred in January 2026 when yet another scammer promised full restitution if additional cryptocurrency purchases were made totaling $585,000. The retiree complied only to have communications severed once again post-transaction.

Lessons Learned and Warnings from Authorities

CyberDefender emphasizes that such incidents showcase how criminals can repeatedly exploit victims through varied tactics. They caution that offers of “guaranteed returns” or “insider tips” are often telltale signs of fraudulent schemes.
This case arrives amidst escalating crypto-related crimes globally. As per Hacken’s data for 2025 alone, Web3 platforms reported losses nearing $3.95 billion due to cybercriminal activities.
Hong Kong’s authorities also report an uptick in phishing attacks targeting crypto users alongside investment ploys aimed at private investors—heightening their vulnerability during transactions involving digital assets.
