The latest report from Cyvers reveals a staggering 900% increase in losses for centralized exchanges due to hacker attacks in Q2 2024.

  • Centralized exchanges (CEX) faced a 900% surge in losses compared to Q2 2023.
  • Hackers stole $1.4 billion in the first half of 2024.
  • 49 separate incidents were reported from May to June 2024.
  • Major attack: DMM Bitcoin platform hacked for $303 million.
  • 42% increase in recovered assets, with over 80% recovered within the first 24 hours.

Significant Surge in Losses for Centralized Exchanges

The latest report from Cyvers has highlighted a significant escalation in hacker activities targeting centralized exchanges. According to their findings, the losses in Q2 2024 amounted to $630 million, a 900% increase from the same period in 2023.

Key Statistics and Insights

From May to June 2024, Cyvers recorded 49 separate hacking incidents. The total losses for the first half of 2024 reached $1.38 billion. In comparison, hackers stole $1.7 billion throughout the entire year of 2023.
The report identified major attack methods:
– Smart contract exploits: $67.4 million.
– Access control violations and phishing: $491.3 million.
– Address poisoning: $71.5 million.

Major Incidents and Their Impact

The most notable incident involved the Japanese platform DMM Bitcoin, which suffered a loss of $303 million. Cyvers experts suggest that the increase in losses may be due to the concentration of assets on centralized platforms and potentially weak security measures on some exchanges.

Progress in Asset Recovery

Despite the significant losses, there has been a 42% increase in the recovery of stolen assets. Over 80% of these recovered assets were returned within the first 24 hours following an attack. However, Cyvers notes that a large portion of stolen funds, over 76%, remains unrecovered.

Future Threats and Considerations

Looking forward, Cyvers specialists predict a rise in attacks on second-layer solutions and the use of AI technologies in cyber raids. They also highlight considerable risks for gaming platforms and the non-fungible token (NFT) sector.
The growing trend of hacker activities poses a substantial threat to the crypto market, emphasizing the need for enhanced security measures and rapid response strategies to protect assets.
