Report: 96% of Over 5000 NFT Collections Are “Dead”

Analysts from NFT Evening have released a comprehensive report examining the state of the non-fungible token (NFT) market in 2024. The study scrutinized over 5000 existing NFT collections and revealed some stark findings. According to the experts, a staggering 96% of these collections are deemed “dead,” meaning they have zero trading volume, no sales for over seven days, and no activity on social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter).

Market Lifespan and Profitability

The report highlights that the average lifespan of an NFT collection is just 1.14 years—2.5 times shorter than that of traditional cryptocurrency projects. Furthermore, four out of ten NFT holders are currently not profiting from their tokens. The past year, 2023, marked a record high in NFT failures, with nearly 30% of projects in this segment categorized as “dead.” On average, 44.5% of NFT owners are facing losses.

Risks and Volatility in the NFT Market

“This harsh statistic underscores the risks associated with investing in the NFT sector and the unpredictable market dynamics,” the report states. Analysts from NFT Evening advise caution for potential investors due to the high levels of loss and market volatility. They also suggest that NFT creators need to rethink their approaches to project implementation.

Successful and Unsuccessful Collections

The report identifies Azuki as the most profitable NFT collection, which has, on average, doubled investors’ returns by 2.3 times. Analysts attribute this success to strong community engagement, effective marketing strategies, and unique artistic style. On the flip side, the Pudgy Penguins collection is noted as the most loss-making, suffering a 97% drop in value, making it the current record-holder for revenue decline among NFT holders.

Broader Implications for the Crypto Market

The findings from NFT Evening’s report suggest a downturn in the NFT market. The analysts emphasize the necessity for cautious investment strategies and advise creators to reassess their project execution methodologies. “The high rate of losses among holders, the stark contrast between successful and unsuccessful collections, and the short lifespan of NFTs all indicate that the market may not be the golden goose many hoped it would be,” concludes the NFT Evening team.
In related news, it is worth recalling that at the end of August 2024, the most expensive NFT from the CryptoPunks collection was sold, further highlighting the diverse and unpredictable nature of the NFT market.
