Aptos Foundation Proposes a Supply Cap at 2.1 Billion APT

The Aptos Foundation has announced plans to overhaul its tokenomics by introducing deflationary measures and setting a maximum supply limit of 2.1 billion APT tokens. This strategic move is designed to ensure long-term sustainability by transitioning from an inflationary to a deflationary model. The proposed changes also include reducing staking rewards and increasing gas fees, aiming for enhanced network efficiency.

The Current State of the Aptos Network

Aptos is a scalable Layer-1 blockchain built using the Move programming language. Its mainnet was launched in October 2022, boasting robust features such as processing blocks within 50 milliseconds without major vulnerabilities or disruptions. As reported by DeFiLlama, the total value locked (TVL) in the network currently stands at $275.9 million.
The blockchain ecosystem hosts over 500 active developers and more than 200 decentralized finance (DeFi) projects. Recently, there has been a shift towards high-frequency scalable products developed on the Aptos architecture engine, including the decentralized exchange Decibel.

Proposed Changes in Tokenomics

In light of these developments, the Aptos Foundation deems it essential to make adjustments that would transition from an inflationary setup to a deflationary model through token burning.
Initial Stages: Initially, Aptos had set its supply at 1 billion APT. Community and treasury allocations were designed for linear unlocking over ten years—51.02% for community initiatives and 16.5% for treasury needs—while team and investor shares underwent a one-year vesting period with an initial staking reward rate of 7%.
Currently, according to Aptoslabs Explorer analytics data, total supply has increased to approximately 1.19 billion APT with about 65% circulating in the market—raising concerns about pressure on token availability.
Key Proposed Changes:

• Staking Rewards Reduction: The proposal suggests cutting staking rewards from 5.19% down to about half at only about half that rate (2.6%), while contemplating higher rates based on asset lock-up duration coupled with introducing new validator structures.
• Increased Gas Fees: Proposing an increase by tenfold yet maintaining competitively low transaction fees within industry standards.
• Burning Mechanisms: Increased coin burns facilitated through high-frequency trading activities like those seen via Decibel’s platform leading towards greater transactions per second (TPS).
• Capped Supply Limit: Setting an upper boundary cap allows flexibility rather than acting rigidly; developers view this measure primarily as safety assurance against oversupply risks amid declining stake rates alongside heightened burn volumes.
