OneCoin Former Top Executive Sentenced to Four Years in Prison

2 Min Read Tags:

In a significant development within the Cryptocurrency legal landscape, a US court has sentenced Irina Dilkinska, the former head of legal and compliance of the cryptocurrency pyramid scheme OneCoin, to four years in prison and imposed a fine of $111 million. Following her prison term, Dilkinska will be under supervision for an additional month.

Key Developments in the OneCoin Case

Dilkinska, alongside Ruja Ignatova and Carl Sebastian Greenwood, was a top executive involved in the fraudulent scheme. She played a crucial role in the day-to-day operations of OneCoin, laundering money through an offshore account in the Cayman Islands.

Admitting guilt in November 2023, Dilkinska had requested house arrest due to her having minor children in Bulgaria, a request the court denied.

The fraudulent OneCoin scheme operated from 2014 to 2016, marketed as a high-return cryptocurrency investment. Investors were promised profits not only from asset growth but also from recruiting new participants.

The Impact and Aftermath

The activities of OneCoin have been estimated to cause around $4 billion in damages. Carl Sebastian Greenwood was sentenced in September 2023 to 20 years in prison and fined $300 million.

Ruja Ignatova’s whereabouts have been unknown since 2017, placing her on the most-wanted lists of both Europol and the FBI. There were unconfirmed reports of Ignatova’s murder in February 2023.

Konstantin Ignatov, Ruja’s brother, was released after serving three years, credited for cooperating with the investigation and testifying against former OneCoin lawyer Mark Scott, who was sentenced on January 25, 2024, to 10 years in prison for laundering $400 million and bank fraud.

Conclusion

The sentencing of key figures in the OneCoin scheme marks a significant milestone in the fight against cryptocurrency fraud. It serves as a cautionary tale for investors and a reminder of the legal implications for those involved in fraudulent cryptocurrency operations.
