Nigeria’s Technological Leap

The Nigerian government has unveiled a groundbreaking initiative aimed at educating citizens in artificial intelligence (AI) and blockchain technologies. The ambitious program aims to train 1,000 individuals annually, positioning Nigeria as a frontrunner in the global tech landscape.

Strategic Partnerships and Funding

To ensure the program’s success, Nigeria has partnered with the tech company Gluwa. This collaboration will provide participants with cutting-edge knowledge and skills, enabling them to contribute significantly to the tech industry. Additionally, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu announced a grant of 150,000 Nigerian naira (approximately $90) for small and medium enterprises (SMEs), fostering the growth of the fintech ecosystem.

National Development Goals

Vice President Kashim Shettima emphasized that the initiative is not merely about catching up with the rest of the world but about surpassing it. “This initiative gives beneficiaries the chance to be part of the global workforce, driving innovations that will shape our future,” Shettima stated.

Expanding Tech Research

Earlier in July 2024, the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) announced plans to establish research centers dedicated to AI, the Internet of Things (IoT), and blockchain across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. This move aims to solidify Nigeria’s position as a technological hub.

According to local financial regulators, one in three Nigerians currently use cryptocurrencies. Digital assets are expanding financial opportunities for over 38 million unbanked individuals, highlighting the transformative potential of cryptocurrencies in the region.

Global Interest in Bitcoin

In June 2024, Nigeria emerged as the leader in global search queries related to Bitcoin, surpassing even El Salvador, where Bitcoin is recognized as legal tender. This surge in interest underscores Nigeria’s growing engagement with digital currencies.
The Nigerian government’s strategic initiatives in tech training and blockchain adoption are set to revolutionize the country’s economic landscape. By fostering innovation and supporting SMEs, Nigeria is poised to become a key player in the global tech arena, driving forward economic growth and technological advancement.
