Moonwell Protocol on Base Network Exploited for $9 Million

  • Moonwell, a DeFi protocol on the Base network, has experienced a significant exploit with losses estimated at around $9 million.
  • The exploit involved manipulation of the low-liquidity token MAMO, used as collateral within the protocol.
  • Stolen funds are primarily in DAI and are currently held in a wallet linked to the attacker.
  • The Moonwell team is actively investigating the breach to mitigate risks and prevent further losses.

Moonwell Protocol Faces Major Exploit

The DeFi protocol Moonwell, operating on the Base network, recently fell victim to an exploit resulting in losses of approximately $9 million. According to blockchain analytics firm PeckShield, an attacker manipulated the value of MAMO, a low-liquidity token used as collateral within Moonwell. This manipulation enabled the malicious actor to borrow liquid assets such as cbBTC, USDC, wstETH, and ETH without adequate backing.
The stolen funds have been traced back to a specific wallet holding DAI. The incident highlights vulnerabilities inherent in DeFi protocols that allow illiquid tokens as collateral.

Attack Details and Impact

Preliminary reports suggest that the attacker artificially inflated MAMO’s value. This allowed them to leverage these tokens for borrowing against other assets within Moonwell. As a result, the protocol incurred unsecured debt.
While initial estimates from ExVul suggest thefts of around 71.36 cbBTC (approximately $5.7 million), CertiK indicates total damages reaching $8.7 million consolidated into one wallet. These varying assessments underscore challenges in accurately quantifying losses following such breaches.
MAMO’s liquidity problems were exacerbated by price manipulation capabilities—factors leveraged by attackers for exploitation.

Response and Mitigation Strategies

In response to this breach, Moonwell’s team has temporarily halted new loans across major markets on Base network while restricting additional deposits involving MAMO or WELL tokens until further notice.
Acknowledging ongoing issues affecting their platform—including past incidents related specifically with asset pricing mechanisms like those encountered earlier this year—the developers remain committed toward resolving current challenges swiftly through comprehensive investigations into potential vulnerabilities exposed during recent attacks against systems underpinning operations here today!
