Mango Markets Aims to Settle SEC Case
Decentralized exchange Mango Markets on the Solana blockchain is moving towards settling a case with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The regulatory body had previously accused the platform of violating securities trading laws.
Proposal for Settlement and Community Voting
The governing body of the platform, Mango DAO, has initiated a community vote to consider a proposal aimed at resolving the dispute with the SEC. If the proposal is accepted, Mango Markets will pay a fine of $223,228, destroy its reserves of MNGO tokens, and begin delisting the asset from trading platforms.
The intent of this proposal is to lift the SEC’s charges and avoid further legal proceedings. However, the organization neither admits nor denies any wrongdoing.
Community’s Strong Support
As of the publication time, the proposal has reached a quorum of 110,796,422 votes, with the majority of Mango DAO participants supporting the initiative. The voting process will continue for two more days.
SEC’s Pending Response
The SEC has yet to respond to the preliminary voting results. If the regulatory body agrees to the proposed terms, the future of Mango Markets could become uncertain.
Background: The October 2022 Hack
Mango Markets has struggled to recover since a major hack in October 2022. An attacker exploited the platform using an “oracle attack,” resulting in the theft of assets worth more than $100 million. The perpetrator, trader Avraham Eisenberg, was arrested two months later and found guilty of manipulating the platform, causing substantial losses.
These developments highlight the ongoing challenges and complexities within the decentralized finance (DeFi) sector, as platforms navigate regulatory landscapes and security vulnerabilities.
The outcome of this settlement proposal could significantly influence the DeFi space, setting precedents for how decentralized platforms manage regulatory compliance and community governance.
