Bitcoin miners listed on U.S. exchanges have significantly increased their share of the global hashrate, reaching a historic 26.6% in June, according to a JPMorgan report.

  • Publicly listed U.S. bitcoin miners now control 26.6% of the global hashrate.
  • Market capitalization of these companies surged by 29% since late June 2024.
  • The overall hashrate of the Bitcoin network grew by 1% in June.
  • AI integration is seen as a key growth driver for these mining companies.

Surge in Public Bitcoin Miners’ Market Share

A recent report by JPMorgan has revealed that the market share of publicly traded bitcoin mining companies has reached an unprecedented 26.6% of the global hashrate as of June 2024. This marks a significant milestone, highlighting the growing influence of these firms in the global cryptocurrency mining landscape.
The report identifies 14 U.S.-registered companies as key contributors to this growth. Notably, the combined market capitalization of these firms has soared by 29% since late June, driven by increasing interest in integrating artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities with mining operations.

Record-High Stock Prices for Miners

The stocks of U.S.-listed bitcoin mining companies have hit record highs, reflecting investor confidence in the sector. Since the Bitcoin halving event in April 2024, the share of public companies in the global hashrate has grown by 5.6%, with a 2.9% increase noted in just the past month.

Network Hashrate and Performance

Compared to June, the overall hashrate of the Bitcoin network has risen by 1%. Nonetheless, it remains approximately 60 EH/s below pre-halving levels. In June alone, U.S.-listed miners added around 17 EH/s to their output. Leading this growth are companies such as Riot Platforms (RIOT), Bitfarms (BITF), and CleanSpark (CLSK).

AI: The Next Frontier for Bitcoin Miners

JPMorgan analysts attribute the impressive performance of these companies to their potential expansion into AI-driven high-performance computing. This trend is underscored by a recent Bernstein report, which describes bitcoin miners as “attractive partners for creating AI data centers.”
Key growth catalysts include Core Scientific’s (CORZ) agreement with CoreWeave and a $150 million investment by Coatue Management in HUT 8 (HUT).
This strategic shift towards AI could redefine the role of bitcoin miners, positioning them at the forefront of technological innovation and operational efficiency.
In summary, the increasing market share and technological advancements of U.S.-listed bitcoin miners underscore their pivotal role in the evolving cryptocurrency landscape. Their growing influence, coupled with potential AI integration, promises significant implications for the broader market, driving both innovation and investment.
