- Igloo said the Abstract blockchain will cease operations on Dec. 15, 2026.
- The company cited high operating costs, low liquidity, a limited DeFi ecosystem and waning market interest.
- Users must move their assets off Abstract before the shutdown or risk losing access to them.
Igloo, the company behind Pudgy Penguins, announced that it will wind down the Abstract blockchain on Dec. 15, 2026. The decision will allow Igloo to redirect staff and resources toward Pudgy Penguins, its NFTs and the PENGU token after the company failed to find a sustainable model for scaling the network.
Igloo said it spent tens of millions of dollars over the past two years supporting and developing Abstract as it sought product-market fit and profitability. The company attributed the shutdown to the high cost of maintaining a standalone blockchain, low liquidity, a limited decentralized-finance ecosystem and declining market interest in the network.
The company also cited limited interest from institutional participants and a smaller budget than those of its competitors. According to Igloo, operating a blockchain focused exclusively on the consumer crypto sector ultimately proved unsustainable as a standalone business.
Igloo said Abstract nevertheless recorded significant growth over the past 18 months. The Portal became a platform for discovering and distributing onchain products, while Abstract Global Wallet made it easier for users to interact with onchain applications.
More than 144 unique applications were deployed on Abstract, and more than 400,000 users joined the network, according to the company. Igloo said brands and intellectual properties including Red Bull Racing and Disney used Abstract to engage audiences through onchain experiences.
However, the team was unable to establish a sustainable model for scaling the network during the past 12 months. Igloo concluded that continuing to fund Abstract was diverting resources from Pudgy Penguins.
Asset migration
Abstract users can begin withdrawing assets through the Migration Center at migrate.abs.xyz or the native bridge at native-bridge.abs.xyz. Igloo said transfers through the native bridge may take as long as three hours.
Users must move their funds off Abstract by Dec. 15, 2026. Any assets left on the network after that date will become inaccessible, according to the company.
Abstract’s engineering and ecosystem teams will help projects deployed on the network migrate to other blockchains. Igloo also warned users about fraudulent migration websites and scam messages, recommending that they use only official links and verify information through Discord and the company’s other official channels.
Focus shifts to Pudgy Penguins
After closing Abstract, Igloo plans to focus fully on Pudgy Penguins. The company described Pudgy Penguins as one of the crypto industry’s most recognizable brands and one of its fastest-growing character intellectual properties.
The Pudgy Penguins ecosystem includes physical products and retail operations, the PENGU token and Pudgy Penguins NFTs. Igloo plans to develop those businesses as a single user-acquisition funnel, moving consumers from products and content to community participation through PENGU and deeper engagement through NFTs.
Igloo described Abstract’s wind-down as the beginning of a new chapter for the company and Pudgy Penguins. The decision follows an earlier announcement from the team behind the Blast layer-2 network that it would shut down that project because it was not economically viable.
