Hong Kong’s SFC Finds Issues Among Crypto Exchanges Seeking Licenses

The Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) has uncovered several instances of “unsatisfactory practices” among cryptocurrency exchanges that have applied for licenses. According to a Bloomberg report, these findings emerged from onsite inspections conducted by the SFC.

Temporary Licenses and Compliance Issues

All the companies in question currently hold temporary licenses while undergoing the registration process. The list includes 11 platforms such as Crypto.com, DFX Labs, and others. During the inspections, some exchanges were found to excessively rely on individual executives responsible for managing digital assets. Additionally, certain exchanges failed to implement adequate security measures to prevent cyber threats.

Potential Sanctions for Non-Compliance

The SFC has warned that companies failing to address these critical deficiencies could face severe consequences. These may include the revocation of their temporary licenses and the rejection of their license applications. The commission emphasized the importance of adhering to stringent regulatory standards to ensure the integrity and security of the crypto market.

Notable Withdrawals and High Standards

In early June 2024, the SFC named the contenders for obtaining full licenses. Among offshore exchanges, only Crypto.com remains in the race. Other notable contenders, such as HTX (formerly Huobi) and Binance, have withdrawn their applications due to the high regulatory requirements.
The revelations by the SFC highlight the ongoing challenges and stringent measures in the regulatory landscape for cryptocurrency exchanges. This move aims to bolster trust and security in the rapidly evolving crypto market, ensuring that only compliant and secure platforms operate within Hong Kong’s jurisdiction.
In summary, the SFC’s rigorous scrutiny and the subsequent identification of issues among crypto exchanges underscore the critical need for robust regulatory compliance. As the crypto industry continues to grow, maintaining high standards will be essential for fostering a secure and trustworthy environment for digital asset trading.
