Bitcoin Holdings Among Governments
The governments of nine nations are holding a significant amount of Bitcoin, valued at $34 billion, according to data from Bitcoin Treasuries. This includes substantial reserves from the United States, China, and the United Kingdom, with Ukraine ranking fourth.
The United States Leads in Bitcoin Reserves
The United States government holds the largest Bitcoin reserve, totaling 213,246 BTC, valued at approximately $13.9 billion at the current rate of $65,376 per BTC. A significant portion of this reserve originates from seizures related to criminal activities, notably the Silk Road darknet marketplace. The founder, Ross Ulbricht, was arrested in 2013 and sentenced to two life terms plus 40 years in 2015.
China’s Significant Bitcoin Holdings
China ranks second with 190,000 BTC. These reserves stem from the confiscation of assets from the Plus Token Ponzi scheme, which targeted users in China and South Korea. Authorities seized these assets in 2019, but there has been no public information regarding any sale of the confiscated Bitcoin.
The United Kingdom’s Bitcoin Reserve
The United Kingdom holds 61,000 BTC, obtained through criminal investigations. In 2018, local authorities confiscated devices containing Bitcoin, which were linked to a fraudulent investment scheme in China, leading to significant financial losses.
Ukraine’s Unique Position
Ukraine holds 46,351 BTC, valued at $3 billion. Unlike other countries, Ukraine’s Bitcoin reserves include donations aimed at supporting the country during the conflict with Russia. Additionally, there have been instances of Bitcoin confiscation related to corruption and criminal activities within the country.
El Salvador’s Bitcoin Strategy
El Salvador, holding 5,800 BTC, stands out for its decision to recognize Bitcoin as legal tender in 2021. This move, despite criticism from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), has led to significant unrealized gains for the country. In March 2023, El Salvador reported over $65 million in unrealized profits from Bitcoin.
Other Countries’ Bitcoin Holdings
Other countries collectively hold 1,017 BTC. Bhutan, Venezuela, Finland, and Georgia are among these nations, with their combined reserves valued at $66.5 million. Notably, Germany recently sold its confiscated Bitcoin, which had once totaled nearly 50,000 BTC.
The increasing Bitcoin reserves among governments highlight the growing recognition of cryptocurrency’s value and potential impact on the global financial landscape.
