Gemholic, a project within the zkSync Era ecosystem, has been accused of executing a $3.5 million rug pull, sparking significant concern within the cryptocurrency community.

  • NSerec, founder of Zkmarkets, demands accountability from KYC provider SolidProof.

Gemholic Accused of $3.5 Million Rug Pull

In a shocking development, Gemholic, part of the zkSync Era ecosystem, has been accused of conducting a rug pull worth $3.5 million. The controversy began in 2023 when the Gemholic team collected 921 ETH during a token sale but soon reported that a smart contract error had frozen the assets.

Initial Concerns and Confirmation

Users suspected foul play early on, but the issue was confirmed by Matter Labs, the creators of zkSync Era. They identified that a malfunction in the .transfer() function of the GemholicIDO smart contract was to blame. On June 7, 2024, zkSync deployed an update to fix the error, unlocking the previously inaccessible funds.

Developer Actions and Community Response

Post-fix, Gemholic developers assured users they would return the funds and collaborate on the project’s future. However, they swiftly transferred the assets to the Ethereum blockchain and vanished, deleting their social media accounts on X (formerly Twitter) and Telegram. This sudden disappearance has left the community in disarray.

Calls for Accountability

NSerec, founder of Zkmarkets, confirmed the rug pull and criticized KYC provider SolidProof for their lack of response. Given that SolidProof had validated Gemholic’s identification process, NSerec called for the company to be held accountable if they fail to address the fraud, even suggesting a name change to “UselessProof.”
This incident highlights the ongoing vulnerabilities within the crypto space, stressing the importance of robust security measures and accountability. The broader impact on the market remains to be seen, but it serves as a cautionary tale for investors and developers alike.
