FBI Agent Accused of Stealing $1 Million in Cryptocurrency and Confessing

In a surprising turn of events, an FBI agent, Patrick Stephen Yaroch, has been arrested on charges of stealing around $1 million in cryptocurrency from counterintelligence investigation files related to a hostile state actor.
Yaroch, who served as a Supervisory Special Agent within the Counterintelligence and Espionage Division at the FBI headquarters from February 2025 to July 31, 2026, exploited his access to sensitive information. With Top Secret/SCI clearance since May 2017, he previously worked at the Boston office focusing on an unnamed “hostile state.”

Details of the Theft

According to the FBI’s account, Yaroch accessed counterintelligence materials and found seed phrases for cryptocurrency wallets linked to the hostile state within internal bureau systems. Memorizing these phrases allowed him to transfer assets into his personal wallet about 10-12 times.
Yaroch revealed he was frustrated that the FBI either couldn’t or wouldn’t freeze these accounts, prompting him to take matters into his own hands. The stolen funds were mixed with his assets; some were placed on the Kraken exchange, while approximately $1.02 million was transferred into the DeFi protocol Suilend via Slush for interest earnings. When asked why he chose Suilend specifically, Yaroch allegedly mentioned being attracted by its water drop-shaped logo.

Confession and Arrest

Remarkably, this investigation wasn’t triggered by blockchain analysis or internal audits but by Yaroch himself reaching out through Signal on July 28, 2026, seeking a meeting with a former Department of Justice colleague.
On July 29th, he confessed the theft during their meeting — visibly emotionally distressed and questioning potential criminal repercussions. That same day he admitted his wrongdoing at FBI headquarters.
Later that evening agents visited Yaroch’s home where he initially handed over a paper containing seed phrases but then retracted consent for seizure shortly after requesting its return. A warrant-backed search on July 31 secured this document along with an iPhone 17 Pro computer hardware wallets among others items seized during searches conducted thereafter.
The government discovered around $1.09 million across various accounts under control by Yaroch signing over part thereof ($925k+) into official crypto-wallets; meanwhile fiat dollars remained stuck within Kraken due inability direct transfer onto government holdings instead skewing figures slightly higher ($165k+).
