  • Schemes like “pig butchering” and physical assaults on crypto holders are on the rise.

Rising Threat of Crypto Crime: Europol’s Urgent Call for Action

In a recent announcement, Europol highlighted a significant increase in the sophistication and scale of cryptocurrency crimes, calling for enhanced international cooperation to tackle these challenges. The European police agency emphasized that such crimes pose a severe test for law enforcement agencies globally, demanding substantial resources and coordination across borders.

Crytocurrency Crimes: A Growing Concern

Europol has pointed out that criminal activities involving cryptocurrencies are becoming increasingly refined. According to Burkhard Mühl, head of the European Financial Crime Center, crypto assets are frequently used to finance terrorism, drug trafficking, and evade sanctions. This places a considerable burden on EU law enforcement agencies.
Europol reported that investor losses from hacks and exploits surpassed $2.1 billion in 2025. The most significant incident was an attack on the Bybit exchange in February, resulting in approximately $1.5 billion being stolen by cybercriminals. Additionally, raids on companies like BtcTurk and Coinbase were noted.

The Rise of “Pig Butchering” Scams

In June, Europol dismantled a fraudulent scheme worth $540 million in Spain involving over 5000 victims. This operation used a tactic known as “pig butchering,” where criminals gain victims’ trust under the guise of romantic relationships to lure them into fake investments.
Experts estimate these schemes brought fraudsters more than $4 billion in 2024 alone. In 2025, another alarming trend emerged: an increase in “wrench attacks,” where criminals resort to physical violence to access cryptocurrencies.

Physical Attacks on Crypto Holders Surge

Chainalysis had previously warned about the potential rise in such incidents. Reports indicate a 54% increase in physical attacks against cryptocurrency owners over the past year. These violent acts have been recorded not only across Europe but also globally—in countries like Brazil, Canada, and Thailand—where victims have been kidnapped or tortured to force them into transferring their assets.
With these developments, Europol stresses the need for stronger international collaboration and advanced training for investigators to combat rapidly evolving crypto crime effectively.
As we reflect on these alarming trends, it’s evident that both authorities and individuals must remain vigilant against evolving threats within the cryptocurrency landscape. The collective response will be crucial for safeguarding investments and maintaining trust within this growing digital economy.
