- Ethereum’s daily transaction volume has surpassed the peaks observed during the NFT boom of 2021, setting a new historical high.
- User activity and the influx of new users have reached multi-year highs.
- The surge in activity is attributed to network updates, reduced fees, and increased institutional demand.
Ethereum Transaction Volume Hits Record High
The daily transaction volume on the Ethereum network has achieved a new historical maximum, surpassing levels recorded at the height of the NFT and DeFi boom in 2021. Activity metrics for addresses and the number of new users in the network have also risen significantly.
As reported by analysts from The Block, on December 31, 2025, the seven-day moving average of transactions reached 1.87 million. This figure exceeds the previous record of 1.61 million transactions set in May 2021 and even surpasses the local peak from August 2025.
Surge in User Activity
User engagement within the Ethereum network has notably intensified. The number of active wallets hit 728,904—the highest level since May 2021. On that same day, more than 270,000 new addresses were created—a record one-day increase since early 2018.
The rise in network activity is linked to technical changes implemented throughout 2025. Two major upgrades—Pectra and Fusaka—were executed to scale the network and reduce user costs.
Impact of Network Upgrades
The Pectra upgrade enhanced data processing capacity, increased staking limits for validators, and introduced other improvements. Meanwhile, Fusaka incorporated PeerDAS to optimize data availability mechanisms and reduce node load amid increasing transaction volumes. This update also lowered network fees.
An additional growth factor was heightened interest from institutional players. The development of real asset tokenization, increased stablecoin turnover, and capital inflow through exchange-traded funds intensified network demand without significantly raising fees.
Future Prospects for Ethereum
In 2026, Ethereum developers plan another round of major updates. The Glamsterdam upgrade aims to enhance overall performance and resilience of the network. Additionally, a subsequent update called Hegota will focus on long-term architecture optimization and decentralization.
Analysts note that despite competition, Ethereum remains a key infrastructure for stablecoins, Real-World Assets (RWA), DeFi platforms, and yield products.
This record-setting transaction volume not only underscores Ethereum’s robust infrastructure but also highlights its critical role in supporting various blockchain-based applications as it continues to evolve with upcoming innovations.
