Director of “47 Ronin” Arrested for Crypto Fraud with Millions from Netflix
In a startling development within the entertainment and cryptocurrency sectors, Carl Rinsch, the acclaimed director known for “47 Ronin” starring Keanu Reeves, has been arrested. The U.S. Attorney’s Office unveiled an indictment accusing Rinsch of fraud and money laundering related to funds provided by Netflix.
The Allegations
Rinsch had secured $55 million from Netflix to produce a series titled “White Horse,” which never aired. Instead of using the funds as intended, Rinsch reportedly invested in various financial avenues, including Dogecoin and stock options.
According to statements from Acting U.S. Attorney Matthew Podolsky and FBI New York Division Chief Leslie Baxchis, Rinsch faced seven counts of fraud connected to the series financing. Initially, Netflix invested around $44 million in the incomplete show but later added another $11 million upon Rinsch’s request for additional funding.
Investment Ventures
Rinsch allegedly diverted $10.5 million into pharmaceutical company options and the S&P 500 index, resulting in a loss of $6 million. However, he reportedly invested $4 million into Dogecoin via Kraken platform transactions from Schwab Bank accounts. This investment purportedly yielded him $27 million.
Rather than channeling these earnings back into production efforts, it is claimed that Rinsch transferred them through several accounts into his brokerage account for speculative trading in securities and cryptocurrencies—ultimately losing over half in just under two months.
Lifestyle Expenditures
The FBI also notes extravagant personal spending by Rinsch with these funds:
- $1.79 million on credit card debt settlement;
- $1.1 million on legal fees (including litigation against Netflix for additional funding);
- $2.4 million on luxury vehicles like five Rolls-Royces and a Ferrari.
Legal Proceedings
Rinsch faces multiple charges including wire fraud (up to 20 years imprisonment), money laundering (up to 20 years), along with five cases involving illegal financial transactions (each carrying up to 10 years). His initial court appearance took place at Los Angeles federal court on March 18th, 2025; Judge Pedro Castillo released him on a $100,000 bail under conditions requiring future appearances in New York courts.
This case highlights ongoing concerns about cryptocurrency misuse amid evolving regulatory landscapes while underscoring potential risks inherent within digital asset investments when intertwined with traditional finance channels such as film production budgets or other large-scale projects requiring fiduciary responsibility adherence across industry domains globally amidst technological advancements impacting economic ecosystems worldwide today!
