U.S. Government’s Strategy on Offloading Seized Bitcoin

On April 2nd, an intriguing development in the world of digital currencies took place as the U.S. government sold 1,999 Bitcoin to Coinbase, the digital assets exchange. This transaction, valued at roughly $130 million, was carried out from a wallet associated with Silk Road, a notorious online black market. According to Arkham Intelligence, only a fraction of the total Bitcoin was spent, leaving a substantial amount of 29,799.99012413 BTC unspent.

Impact on Government’s Bitcoin Holdings

This transaction resulted in a significant reduction in the US government’s seized Bitcoin balance. The stash shrunk from 210,800 BTC to 208,800 BTC according to CryptoQuant data. Consequently, the government now holds less than 1% of the total BTC supply.

Government’s Track Record with Bitcoin Sales

This sale is part of the government’s ongoing strategy of gradually offloading seized BTC holdings. Notably, in March 2023, approximately 10,000 BTC were sold when the price of Bitcoin was hovering around $21,500. This sale nearly coincided with a local price bottom, which dipped to around $20,000 during the SVB collapse. Another noteworthy sale of approximately 8,200 BTC occurred on July 12, 2023, when Bitcoin was trading at around $30,000.

Akin to UK’s Gold Reserves Sale in 1999

This development is reminiscent of when the UK government sold more than half of its gold reserves in 1999 at roughly $270 per ounce. This decision was made at a cyclical bottom before gold embarked on a multi-year bull run, suggesting the possibility of a similar pattern emerging with Bitcoin.

Quick Take

The US government has reportedly sold 1,999 Bitcoin, approximately $130 million, to digital assets exchange Coinbase. This transaction comes from a wallet associated with the infamous Silk Road and is part of the government’s ongoing strategy to gradually offload seized Bitcoin holdings. These sales often coincide with local price bottoms, echoing the UK government’s sale of gold reserves in 1999. The government now holds less than 1% of the total BTC supply.
