Crypto Traders Strengthen Security Measures Amid Rising ‘Wrench Attacks’

As reported by Bloomberg, the surge in physical violence against cryptocurrency owners coincides with a booming market. This troubling trend is leading traders to seek additional security measures. Known as “wrench attacks,” these incidents involve criminals using force to obtain private keys or compel victims to transfer their digital assets.
In 2025, approximately 60 such attacks were documented by Jameson Lopp, co-founder of Casa. This marked an increase from around 40 in the previous year. Experts believe the actual number may be significantly higher because many victims do not report these crimes.

A Disturbing Rise in High-Profile Incidents

Recent months have witnessed several alarming cases:
– A trader was kidnapped in Manhattan.
– An attempted abduction of a crypto executive’s daughter occurred in Paris.
– In San Francisco, a thief posing as a courier stole $11 million worth of digital assets.
– The son of Kharkiv’s deputy mayor was murdered over cryptocurrency holdings.
These incidents reveal that criminals are no longer just targeting wealthy individuals; increasingly, those with middle-class savings are also at risk.

The Response: Heightened Security Measures

In response to this growing threat, crypto traders are turning to private security firms like Vigilance, BlackCloak, Solace Global, and DeleteMe. These companies report increased demand for services that protect personal data and ensure physical safety. They analyze clients’ digital footprints, remove personal information from online sources, and assess potential risks—even reviewing satellite images of clients’ homes.
Charles Finfrock, founder of Vigilance, notes that many traders previously flaunted their wealth on social media—posting images of wallets and purchases. However, they now aim to “reduce their vulnerability surface” by re-evaluating their online behavior. Even family celebration photos can provide crucial clues for criminals.

The Challenges Behind Cryptocurrency Security

Security is further complicated because more than half of crypto holders use self-custody for their assets. Unlike bank transfers, blockchain operations are irreversible and anonymous transactions make recovering stolen funds difficult.
Experts recommend implementing multisignatures, transaction time locks, and dividing key access to reduce risk. Several high-profile cases have demonstrated the effectiveness of these precautions. Eric Larchevêque, co-founder of Ledger, recounted how safety measures allowed him time to react when his partner was kidnapped for ransom. Consequently, nearly all transferred funds were frozen and recovered while victims were rescued.
This combination of cybersecurity and physical protection is becoming an essential component within the digital asset industry.
By understanding these risks and adopting stringent security protocols—traders can better safeguard their assets against increasingly sophisticated threats in the evolving world of cryptocurrencies.
