The blockchain security firm SlowMist has issued a warning regarding the dangers inherent in purchasing inexpensive hardware wallets.

An unsuspecting user fell victim to fraud when they acquired what seemed like a legitimate cold wallet through an online retailer on Douyin Shop. Unfortunately, the device was compromised from creation, with its private key stolen beforehand, allowing scammers to swiftly transfer assets out of the account. This exploitation underscores how counterfeit products can be meticulously designed traps.

Understanding the Threat: Compromised Devices

According to SlowMist’s report, this incident underscores that not all cold wallets equate to safety. The company emphasizes caution when choosing where and how to purchase such critical devices. As articulated by Hella, a former team member of Bitmain co-founder Jihan Wu, “When buying a cold wallet, choose reliable channels… most available online are fake.”
Hella’s close friend was directly impacted by this scam, describing his experience as shocking and distressing when he found his funds had disappeared overnight.

Investigating Further: The Role of Huiwang

The stolen funds were reportedly laundered through Huiwang within hours—a Cambodian conglomerate operating in a gray area with entities like Huione Pay PLC and Huione Crypto exchange under its umbrella.
Reports have suggested that Huiwang operates illicit activities including dark web marketplaces; notably, Elliptic’s analysis earlier in 2025 identified Huione Guarantee as one of the largest illegal marketplaces with transaction volumes hitting $24 billion.
