Compound Community Agrees to Cancel Governance Attack Proposal

The Compound protocol has taken significant steps to protect its governance integrity. The community, including key stakeholders, has agreed to cancel Proposal #289, which was suspected of being part of a Governance Attack. The proposal intended to allocate 499,000 COMP tokens, valued at approximately $24 million, to the goldCOMP protocol. This project aimed to provide passive income for COMP token holders.
Members of the group known as Golden Boys, led by a user named Humpy, had previously attempted several times to push for the asset allocation to goldCOMP. Despite their eventual success, the community raised concerns about potential manipulations. Governance Attacks allow malicious actors to influence decentralized projects and skew voting outcomes.

New Staking Product to Safeguard Governance

In response to these concerns, Compound’s development group, led by CEO Brian Colligan, proposed an alternative initiative that aligns with the interests of the Golden Boys without jeopardizing Compound’s governance. According to Colligan, the new staking product, Staked Compound, will address the stated interests of Humpy and other COMP holders while mitigating governance risks.
The new proposal suggests distributing 30% of existing and future reserves among participants based on their staking contributions. This initiative is expected to enhance the security of Compound DAO’s governance by reducing the likelihood of future Governance Attacks.

Community Support and Market Reaction

The majority of the Compound community, including Humpy, have endorsed the new initiative. One community member highlighted that staking COMP could significantly improve the security of Compound DAO’s governance mechanisms. Following the announcement of the agreement, the price of COMP tokens saw a notable increase. After falling below $47, the token price rebounded to $51.35.
Earlier, Compound CEO Robert Leshner announced plans to launch a fund for tokenized U.S. Treasury bonds, further showcasing the protocol’s commitment to innovation and security.
The recent developments within the Compound community highlight the importance of robust governance mechanisms in decentralized finance. By addressing potential vulnerabilities and securing community support, Compound continues to strengthen its position as a leading DeFi protocol.
