CME Group to Launch Round-the-Clock Cryptocurrency Trading in May

The financial industry is on the brink of a transformative milestone as CME Group announces its plan to initiate 24/7 trading for regulated cryptocurrency futures and options. This groundbreaking development is set to commence on May 29, 2026, marking a significant evolution in the accessibility and operability of cryptocurrency markets. Trading activities will unfold on the esteemed CME Globex platform, enhancing opportunities for investors worldwide.

Unprecedented Access and Convenience

According to Tim McCourt, Global Head of Equity Index and Alternative Investment Products at CME Group, the demand for risk management tools within the digital asset segment is currently at an all-time high. In light of this trend, CME Group’s initiative aims to provide traders with uninterrupted access to their regulated crypto offerings. Such accessibility empowers clients to manage their market exposure seamlessly and trade confidently at any hour.
Incorporating continuous trading aligns with evolving market demands. However, it also acknowledges that not every market can sustain a 24/7 model. Nevertheless, by offering constant access to its transparent crypto products, CME Group ensures traders have flexibility and confidence in managing their portfolios.

Operational Framework and Technical Aspects

The statement from CME Group specifies that continuous trading will begin at 4:00 PM Central Time (CT) on May 29 through the CME Globex platform. To maintain optimal system performance, there will be a scheduled maintenance window lasting no less than two hours over weekends.
Trading during holidays or weekends—from Friday evening until Sunday evening—will adopt the subsequent business day’s date. This means weekend trades are executed but formally recorded as occurring on a weekday. Critical operations such as clearing, settlements, and regulatory reporting are scheduled for completion on the next working day.

Growth Trends in Crypto Futures

CME Group has witnessed remarkable growth in crypto futures and options during recent years. The average daily volume of futures contracts has reached an impressive figure of 403,900—a substantial increase of 47% compared to last year. This surge underscores the growing interest among investors seeking sophisticated instruments within digital markets.
Previously reported records highlight unprecedented crypto activity captured by CME Group throughout 2025. Additionally, February 2026 saw CEO Terry Duffy indicating an exploration into launching a proprietary crypto asset—a testament to their commitment towards innovation in this dynamic sector.
As we look ahead toward May’s launch date underpinned by robust infrastructure advancements like those offered through continuous trading platforms such as CME Globex—the stage is set for an exciting new era where cryptocurrencies continue reshaping global finance landscapes while empowering traders with unparalleled opportunities across diverse horizons.
