Yang Qichao’s Fraudulent Scheme

Yang Qichao, a Chinese college student, was recently sentenced to 4.5 years in prison and fined 30,000 yuan ($4140) for his involvement in a cryptocurrency fraud scheme. The court found him guilty of releasing a counterfeit token named Blockchain Future Force (BFF) on the BNB Chain network.
According to local media, Yang misled an investor, identified as Luo, convincing him to invest a total of $50,000. Yang subsequently withdrew the funds, including the liquidity he initially deposited as bait, totaling $300,000 in USDT, along with Luo’s assets.

Legal Proceedings and Defense

On February 20, 2024, the Nanyang People’s Court convicted Yang of fraud. During a subsequent hearing on May 20, 2024, Yang’s defense attorney argued that the cryptocurrency had a unique and tamper-proof contract address. They claimed Yang had a clear understanding of virtual asset speculation and did not violate any rules. Despite these arguments, the prosecution maintained that Yang had deposited liquidity as a lure for future victims and then embezzled the pooled funds.
