Bitcoin Surpasses Most Miners’ Stocks in Profitability
In an impressive turn of events, Bitcoin’s price skyrocketed by 133.3% in 2024, reaching a new historical peak of $108,309 in November. Despite this remarkable surge, the majority of mining companies couldn’t keep up. According to data from Hashrate Index, only eight out of the 25 leading mining firms are likely to close the year on a profitable note.
Top Performers: Bitdeer and TeraWulf
Notably, Bitdeer and TeraWulf managed to exceed the extraordinary Bitcoin price growth. Experts have identified Bitdeer’s stocks as undervalued, which led to a $150 million investment from Tether, the issuer of USDT. TeraWulf, known for its nuclear-powered mining facility, concluded 2024 positively, having inaugurated a new data center in September.
Challenges Faced by Other Miners
However, for most miners, the year was challenging. Significant declines in stock prices were observed for companies such as Argo Blockchain (83%), Greenidge (74.6%), and Bitfarms (40.5%). These setbacks are largely attributed to the fourth Bitcoin halving, which reduced the block reward to 3.125 BTC, drastically affecting miners’ income.
Before the halving, miners’ daily revenues fluctuated between $50 million and $70 million, peaking at $100 million in April. Post-halving, these figures dropped to a range of $30 million to $40 million, illustrating the economic pressure on the mining sector.
The Impact on Mining Equipment and Adaptation
The soaring price of Bitcoin not only affected miners’ revenues but also increased the cost of flagship energy-efficient mining equipment. This escalation presented additional challenges for companies striving to adapt to new market conditions.
The evolving landscape of cryptocurrency mining in 2024 underscores the volatile nature of the sector, highlighting both the potential for substantial gains and the risks posed by market fluctuations and protocol changes. As the industry progresses, companies will need to innovate and adapt to sustain profitability amidst these dynamic conditions.
