Aztec relaunched its non-custodial zk.money wallet for private crypto payments on September 29, 2026, the team announced. The new product runs on the privacy-focused Aztec Network layer-2 system for Ethereum and allows users to make payments without publicly revealing key transaction details.

How the new zk.money works

Transactions within zk.money do not disclose a user’s balance, the amount transferred or the transaction participants on the public blockchain, according to the wallet’s documentation. Deposits and withdrawals conducted through Ethereum remain visible.

The wallet uses DAI at launch. Users may also deposit USDC and USDT, which zk.money converts into DAI upon deposit. During the initial stage, deposits, payments and withdrawals are limited to less than $2,500 per transaction.

Users can receive funds through unique tags in the name.zk.money format or through payment links. The wallet is non-custodial, meaning users retain control of their keys.

Why Aztec rebuilt zk.money

Aztec launched the original version of zk.money in March 2021 as an application for private transfers on Ethereum. The product later became part of the Aztec Connect infrastructure.

During its first run, zk.money attracted more than 75,000 unique wallets and processed over $100 million in transactions, the team said.

Aztec Connect stopped accepting new deposits in March 2023. The team permanently shut down its sequencer on March 31, 2024.

The developers later explained that the existing architecture could not support full decentralization without major changes. The use of shared state also created limitations for interoperability between applications.

Aztec subsequently focused on developing a new version of Aztec Network. In November 2025, the project was deployed on mainnet as Ignition Chain, the network’s decentralized consensus layer.

The relaunched zk.money uses that new architecture. Despite retaining the same name, it is a new product, and accounts and funds from the previous version do not carry over, according to the project’s FAQ.
