ARK Invest: Quantum Computers May Hack Bitcoin by 2030s

4 Min Read Tags:

  • Quantum computing is identified as a potential long-term threat to Bitcoin’s cryptographic security.
  • Current quantum systems are not yet capable of breaking Bitcoin’s encryption.
  • The evolution of quantum threats will be gradual, with significant breakthroughs expected in the mid-2030s.
  • An estimated 35% of Bitcoin’s circulating supply could be at risk if quantum attacks become feasible.

Understanding the Quantum Threat to Bitcoin

In a collaborative study, ARK Invest and the Unchained platform have delved deep into the potential impact of quantum computing on Bitcoin’s network security. The report highlights that while quantum computers pose a long-term risk to the cryptographic foundations of Bitcoin, they currently do not present an immediate threat. As technology advances, however, this situation could change significantly.

The Gradual Evolution of Quantum Computing

The development of quantum technology is anticipated to unfold gradually. Initially, advancements might impact internet security and other cryptosystems before posing a direct threat to Bitcoin. This progression provides some time for industry and regulators to coordinate effectively.

Current Capabilities and Future Needs

Presently, quantum computers operate within the NISQ (Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum) stage, possessing around 100 logical qubits with limited depth in their circuits. To breach elliptic curve cryptography (ECC), which secures Bitcoin transactions, at least 2330 logical qubits alongside billions of operations would be required—far beyond current capabilities.

Potential Risks and Implications

Research indicates that approximately 35% of Bitcoin’s existing supply could be vulnerable if quantum attacks materialize. This includes around 1.7 million BTC considered lost and another 5.2 million BTC stored in migratable addresses.

The Stages of Quantum Threat Development

Quantum risks are likely to develop in stages: initially lacking commercial utility but eventually proving valuable across scientific disciplines like chemistry and materials science. Only later might these systems crack outdated or weak encryption algorithms.
Ultimately, powerful enough quantum computers may target ECC used by Bitcoin. However, early breaches will take considerable time until they can outpace block creation intervals on the network—necessitating a shift towards post-quantum cryptography.

First Breaches and Their Implications

According to projections from leading tech firms such as Google, IBM, and Microsoft—and supported by governmental bodies—the first successful attack on ECC might occur around the mid-2030s. The gap between initial breaches and subsequent ones will be crucial; initial attempts may require vast resources without quick repetition possibilities.
For instance: if breaking one key takes a day’s effort using colossal resources—targeting Satoshi Nakamoto’s addresses alone (around 22k) would span decades!

The Economic Aspect: Cost vs Benefit Analysis

Quantum computer-driven attacks must outweigh costs with stolen coin market value surpassing attack expenses. In 2023 alone—energy costs for breaking one key were estimated at $100k! Add substantial investments needed for development/manufacturing/operation/maintenance into account too—highlighting how reduced future computation costs combined with rising BTC prices might incentivize malicious actors eventually!
This exploration underscores significant implications awaiting crypto industry adaptation amidst evolving technologies poised potentially reshaping landscape profoundly over coming decades!
