Flow Confirms Network Attack with Nearly $4 Million Loss

The Flow network recently faced a significant security breach, highlighting ongoing challenges in the decentralized finance (DeFi) sector. On December 27, 2025, an attacker exploited a vulnerability within Flow’s execution layer to siphon off approximately $3.9 million. This incident occurred despite efforts from validators who initiated a coordinated halt to minimize further damage.

According to Flow Foundation, immediate actions were taken following the attack. A coordinated network stop by validators effectively prevented additional fund outflows, ensuring that user balances remained intact and unaffected. “Critically important is that this exploit did not provide access to existing user balances,” emphasized Flow Foundation representatives, highlighting their commitment to maintaining security across their platform.

Post-attack analysis revealed that funds were primarily moved using inter-network bridges such as Celer, deBridge, Relay, and Stargate. Some assets were later converted into Ethereum (ETH), Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC), and stablecoins for liquidity purposes. Specifically noted was the conversion of approximately 9.8 WBTC—valued at around $930,000 during transactions—and 339,000 PYUSD into Ethereum.
The identified malicious actor’s wallet on the Ethereum network has been flagged as harmful while active tracking continues through privacy-enhancing protocols such as THORChain and Chainflip.

In response to this breach, Flow Foundation has reached out to key market participants like Circle and Tether for asset freezing requests. Major cryptocurrency exchanges including Binance, Coinbase, and Kraken have also been alerted as part of comprehensive recovery efforts involving forensic partners and law enforcement agencies.
Despite these challenges, officials assured stakeholders that confirmed losses remain manageable without threatening network solvency or user assets’ integrity.
