Analytics platform Santiment recorded deteriorating sentiment toward bitcoin amid the U.S. midterm elections. According to its data, the crypto community fears a potential strengthening of the Democratic Party’s position, adding pressure to the market.
On Oct. 20, there were about 1.8 bullish comments about bitcoin for every bearish one, Santiment said. The ratio subsequently shifted toward negative assessments as prices declined.
News of the Binance hack further worsened sentiment at the end of October, pushing the metric down to 0.37 bullish comments for every bearish one. Sentiment later partially recovered, but bearish comments began to dominate again as voting day approached. The current ratio of bullish to bearish comments stands at 0.51.
Preliminary results from the Nov. 3, 2026, midterm elections indicated that the Democratic Party was closing in on majorities in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. Ballot counting remained underway, but early data pointed to stronger Democratic positions and reduced Republican leverage.
Why the elections are pressuring crypto sentiment
Santiment said many retail traders view continued Republican control as a more favorable outcome for the crypto industry. Republican lawmakers and President Donald Trump’s administration advanced initiatives involving the regulation of digital assets and stablecoins, as well as protections for users’ right to self-custody cryptoassets.
Forecasts that the House could shift to Democratic control, combined with a close Senate contest, are therefore increasing uncertainty among market participants.
Santiment noted that strongly bearish sentiment can sometimes serve as a contrarian market signal. If bitcoin holds between $76,500 and $77,000 amid elevated fear, the likelihood of a short-term rebound could increase.
A move above $79,000 would strengthen that signal, particularly if most retail traders continued to expect further declines. Conversely, a decisive fall below $76,000 would indicate that price action was confirming market participants’ concerns.
Analysts also advised monitoring the market’s response after the final election results are announced. They said a “sell the rumor, buy the news” scenario could emerge if uncertainty declines once voting concludes.
