Memecoins: The Trojan Horse of the Crypto Market

The debate around memecoins’ value is polarizing. Eddie Lazarien, CTO of a16z, argues that memecoins undermine the long-term vision of cryptocurrencies and deter serious developers. In contrast, Michael Novogratz, CEO of Galaxy Digital, asserts that memecoins are a cornerstone of the crypto economy, with substantial market influence.
Vitalik Buterin, a notable voice in the crypto community, suggests that the issue isn’t a lack of fundamental value but rather the community’s failure to use memecoins for beneficial purposes like charity. He acknowledges memecoins’ ability to attract attention, a trait that many experts view as their primary advantage.

Attention Economy and Memecoins

Declan Keen, an analyst at DeSpread, highlights that memecoins crystallize the attention economy. According to Keen, memecoins are a straightforward method to monetize attention, with token value directly linked to popularity. This assertion is supported by analysts at Messari, who found that the most successful memecoins are those that gradually spread to a growing number of holders with minimal whale influence.

Memecoins as a Go-to-Market Strategy

Lee Yin points out that more projects are using memecoins as a market entry strategy. Developers initially launch a token to capture users’ attention and build a strong community, then develop a related product. This approach aligns with the principles of the attention economy and differs from traditional strategies where the product precedes user acquisition.
Yash Agarwal, a researcher at Superteam DAO, considers governance tokens of many projects similar to memecoins. These tokens often fail to perform their primary function efficiently, with the main goal being to attract market attention. Agarwal dubs them “memecoins in disguise.”

Broadening the Crypto Audience

Memecoins have a unique ability to attract users beyond the crypto industry. Based on Agarwal’s perspective, the main advantage of memecoins is their association with widely recognizable personalities and events, making them more familiar to a broader audience.
For instance, while Arbitrum (ARB) governance tokens appeal to investors familiar with Ethereum’s issues and L2 networks, PEPE attracts users through its meme and comic associations. This wider cultural appeal can bring “fresh blood” into the crypto market, similar to the impact of NFTs in 2021-2022.
Arthur Hayes and Maartje Bus, Vice President of Research at Messari, agree that networks supporting and promoting memecoins will grow in value over time. Memecoins act as a “Trojan Horse,” facilitating the mass adoption of blockchain technology.

Effective Marketing Strategies

Memecoin projects often employ more effective marketing campaigns compared to other Web3 initiatives. The community behind Dog Wif Hat (WIF) raised over $700,000 for advertising on MSG Sphere in Las Vegas. Celebrities like Iggy Azalea actively promote tokens like Mother (MOTHER), while Elon Musk occasionally acts as a “magnet” for Dogecoin (DOGE).
Such projects leverage partnerships, advertising, and community resources to achieve recognition. Active social media profiles and marketing strategies based on broad cultural narratives often attract a larger, more engaged audience than financial incentives like airdrops or point programs.
In essence, the fundamental value of memecoins lies in their capacity to capture audience attention and utilize it for various purposes, including launching new products. This perspective aligns with Vitalik Buterin’s view, which highlights the need for meaningful applications of memecoins rather than dismissing their utility outright.
