Introduction

On June 20, 2024, 3iQ filed an application to launch a Solana-based spot ETF in Canada. This development, announced by Bloomberg Intelligence analyst James Seyffart, positions 3iQ to introduce the first investment product of this kind in North America.

Unpacking the QSOL ETF

According to a press release, the new fund, Solana Fund, will trade under the ticker QSOL on the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSE). If approved, QSOL will pioneer as the first Solana-based investment product in both Canada and North America. The fund will enable access to Solana tokens (SOL) minus the complexities associated with digital asset management and technical issues.

Why Solana?

3iQ highlighted Solana’s robust blockchain, which commands a market capitalization of approximately $65 billion as of June 2024. Solana’s high transaction speeds and low costs make it particularly appealing for developers in the decentralized finance (DeFi) and non-fungible token (NFT) sectors, fostering ecosystem growth.

Market Reach and Staking Benefits

QSOL’s application has been submitted to securities regulators across all Canadian provinces and territories, except Quebec. The ETF will offer exposure to SOL and track daily price changes in US dollars. Moreover, market participants can gain a percentage of profits through Solana token staking, estimated to yield between 6% and 8%.

Institutional Custodianship

Coinbase Custody and Tetra Trust will act as custodians for the Solana ETF from 3iQ. Coinbase Custody will also provide the institutional infrastructure needed for staking Solana assets.

3iQ’s Track Record

James Seyffart noted that Canada introduced Bitcoin and Ethereum spot ETFs well before the US. For instance, Canada’s first Bitcoin ETF launched in February 2021, with Ethereum-based products following two months later. Currently, 3iQ’s Bitcoin ETF (BTCQ) and Ether Staking ETF (ETHQ) are key products listed on the TSE, with net assets worth $233 million and $38.7 million, respectively.

Outlook and Industry Impact

The launch of QSOL is set to be a significant milestone for cryptocurrency investment products in North America. While Standard Chartered had forecasted the listing of Solana and XRP ETFs no earlier than 2025, 3iQ’s proactive moves could accelerate market developments. This ETF could provide investors easier access to Solana, potentially boosting its adoption and integration within the broader crypto ecosystem.
As the crypto landscape continues to evolve, 3iQ’s strategic initiatives underscore the growing importance of digital assets in traditional finance, paving the way for more innovative financial products in the future.
