- In August, at least 13 dormant Bitcoin addresses, inactive for 12 to 15 years, suddenly became active.
- These addresses transferred nearly 818 BTC, valued over $60 million at the time of transactions.
- Bitcoin’s price increase created substantial paper gains, but the transfers alone do not show that the holders sold the coins or realized profits.
Dormant Bitcoin Addresses Move Again
The crypto world witnessed a remarkable event this August as several long-dormant Bitcoin addresses became active. According to Galaxy Research, these addresses had been inactive for periods ranging from 12 to more than 15 years. During their resurgence, nearly 818 BTC were moved, with a combined market value exceeding $60 million at the time of these transactions.
A Decade-Long Wait Ends
The most substantial transaction occurred on August 18 when a wallet that had been untouched for approximately 14 years transferred 212 BTC. At the time of this transfer, these coins were valued at about $13.66 million, showcasing an astronomical rise from their average cost of around $12 per coin.
Another significant movement was observed on August 22. On this date, activity across several old addresses led to an additional transfer of approximately 282.31 BTC. Included in this batch were coins that had been held for over eleven years and originated back in 2011.
Insights From Historical Transactions
On August 29, another dormant address made headlines by moving 10 BTC after more than fifteen years of inactivity. This transaction was notable because the value had surged from an initial estimate of $15 per coin to approximately $777,000 at the time of transfer.
Throughout early to mid-August, various other transactions took place involving amounts ranging from about eight and a half to nearly fifty bitcoins per transaction. The coins involved in these activities had been held between twelve and fifteen years, showing paper gains worth millions at the transfer prices; a transfer alone does not establish a realized gain.
A noteworthy event on August 26 saw a transfer involving forty bitcoins after fourteen years and two months of silence. Galaxy Research estimated the address’s paper appreciation at about $3.16 million; the transfer itself does not establish a sale or realized profit.
