The legal proceedings trace back to July 2022 when Yuga Labs accused Jeremy Cahen and artist Ryder Ripps of launching RR/BAYC—a satirical NFT collection that copied Bored Ape images as a form of protest. This project allegedly infringed on Yuga Labs’ trademark rights. In April 2023, a court ruled in favor of Yuga Labs and awarded them over $1.5 million in damages. By February 2024, this amount had increased to almost $9 million due to attorney fees and interest.

Despite repeated efforts by Yuga Labs under California law since March 2024’s final judgment enforcement date, Cahen has not paid any part of the compensation nor secured a stay on its execution. Consequently, Yuga Labs claims legal entitlement for asset recovery.
