Three tourists from California had to be rescued while climbing Mount Shasta after planning the trip with help from Google Gemini, the Chicago Tribune reported on Sept. 3, 2026. The incident underscored the risks of relying solely on AI for route and supply information in the mountains, according to the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office.
After the rescue, the men told a Sheriff’s Office representative that they had used Gemini to obtain information about the route and the supplies they would need. The agency described their overreliance on AI as a “critical mistake.”
According to rescuers, Gemini advised the group to bring significantly less food and water than they ultimately needed when their planned eight-hour climb turned into a multi-day trip.
The tourists established camp at an elevation of about 8,400 feet and began their summit attempt at around 03:00. They did not reach the summit until about 19:00, seven hours later than the recommended turnaround time, forcing them to descend after dark.
The group then lost the route and entered Mud Creek Canyon. One member fell and injured his knee, and the tourists had to spend the night in the mountains.
U.S. Forest Service personnel found the group the next morning. Volunteers from the Siskiyou County Search and Rescue team subsequently joined the operation, and all members of the group and the rescuers returned safely to the trailhead.
The Sheriff’s Office urged travelers to verify information with local rangers and use multiple navigation methods. It also warned hikers not to rely solely on AI when planning trips.
Separately, MrBeast and Beast Industries entered a multi-year partnership with Google under which Gemini will be integrated directly into the content creator’s videos and creative process, including extreme challenges in the jungle, desert and Arctic.
