Innovative Developments: Sony Applies for U.S. Banking License

In a significant move within the cryptocurrency sector, Connectia Trust, a subsidiary of Sony Bank, has filed an application with the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) for a National Trust Charter. This strategic step highlights Sony’s ambition to expand into digital finance by potentially launching a stablecoin tied to the U.S. dollar.
According to Law360, this application was submitted on October 7, 2025. The OCC will collect comments until November 7. If granted this license, Connectia Trust could offer diverse financial services with a focus on cryptocurrency solutions.

Planned Crypto Innovations

The company’s plans include issuing stablecoins pegged to the dollar and maintaining appropriate reserve assets. Additionally, it intends to offer non-fiduciary digital asset custody services and asset management services as a fiduciary for specific affiliates.
Sony Group, which owns Sony Bank, is a global conglomerate comprising numerous subsidiaries. As of now, neither Sony nor OCC has provided comments on this development.

Ongoing Industry Trends

Currently, Anchorage Digital Bank is the only organization that has successfully acquired this license from OCC. Although Anchorage registered in 2021, it faced an order from OCC to cease operations in 2022. This restriction was lifted only in August 2025.
Alongside Sony, prominent entities like Coinbase and Ripple Labs have also applied for trust bank licenses. These companies aim not to engage in traditional banking but rather to innovate new products and streamline operations within the regulatory framework of the United States.

Regulatory Reactions and Challenges

Despite these advancements, the American Bankers Association (ABA) has expressed opposition to this practice. They have urged OCC to deny such requests, asserting that crypto companies do not meet the stringent requirements necessary for obtaining this license.
This ongoing debate reflects broader tensions between traditional financial institutions and emerging digital currency platforms as they vie for space in a rapidly evolving market landscape.
The application by Connectia Trust is yet another sign of how major corporations are increasingly recognizing and acting upon opportunities within the digital finance sphere. As these developments unfold, they could significantly impact regulatory approaches and market dynamics in the cryptocurrency industry.
