  • Pavel Durov, founder of Telegram, invested in Bitcoin back in 2013.
  • He bought several thousand Bitcoins at approximately $700 each.
  • Durov believes Bitcoin is censorship-resistant and sees it as a reliable store of value.
  • The profits from his Bitcoin investments fund his lifestyle rather than Telegram revenues.
  • He predicts Bitcoin could reach a value of $1 million due to its limited supply against ongoing fiat currency printing.

Pavel Durov’s Early Investment in Bitcoin

Pavel Durov, the visionary behind Telegram, made headlines by revealing that he had invested in Bitcoin as early as 2013. During an interview with Lex Fridman, Durov shared insights into his belief in the first cryptocurrency. He disclosed purchasing several thousand Bitcoins at around $700 each, long before the virtual currency became mainstream.

Bitcoin: A Censorship-Resistant Store of Value

Durov emphasized that he considers Bitcoin to be the sole asset capable of preserving wealth without the threat of censorship. Despite the volatility seen over the years, including a significant drop to $200-$300 shortly after his investment, Durov remained steadfast. He resisted selling during downturns because he viewed cryptocurrency as an unseizable and uncensorable medium of exchange.

The Role of Bitcoin Profits in Funding Lifestyle

Interestingly, Durov clarified that Telegram does not serve as a personal profit source for him. Instead, it’s his strategic investments in Bitcoin that allow him to finance luxuries such as renting high-end properties and flying private jets. He remarked that while some may assume these are funded through Telegram’s revenue streams, that’s simply not the case.

A Bold Prediction: Bitcoin to Reach $1 Million?

In a bold statement, Pavel Durov projected a potential rise in Bitcoin’s value to an astonishing $1 million. He attributes this forecast to the fact that governments worldwide continue to print fiat currencies without restraint. In contrast, Bitcoin’s issuance is capped and predictable.
Durov noted: Just look at the trends. Governments keep printing money non-stop. But Bitcoin isn’t printed; it has predictable inflation which will eventually stop.
While he acknowledged that all fiat currencies’ futures remain uncertain under such conditions, he firmly believes in the staying power and potential growth of cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin.
As we reflect on these insights from one of tech’s pioneering figures, it’s clear that cryptocurrencies are more than just financial assets; they represent a transformative shift toward decentralized financial systems with immense untapped potential for growth and innovation.
